Welcome to the fourth grade!

Learning Log: Students in fourth grade are expected to read 40 minutes or more per night. They are also expected to practice basic math facts (multiplication tables, one-digit addition and subtraction, etc.) for 10 minutes each night.

Learning Logs are due on the first day of each month. The September log will be due Monday, October 1.


What We'll Be Learning This Year

Math: Students will explore the following-

  • Multi-digit multiplication
  • Multi-digit addition and subtraction
  • Multi-digit division
  • Attributes of geometric figures
  • Coordinate planes
  • Patterns and functions
  • Area and perimeter
  • Adding/subtracting, converting, and comparing fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers
  • Comparing and ordering decimal numbers
  • Multi-step word problems
  • Making and reading line plots and bar graphs
  • Concepts of probability
  • The metric and US customary measurement systems


Science: Students will explore-

  • The solar system
  • Food chemistry (proteins, starches, sugars, and fats)
  • Aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems
  • Complete electrical circuit systems

Reading: Students will explore-

  • Making inferences
  • Determining author's purpose (to entertain, inform, or persuade)
  • Writing summaries of fiction and nonfiction
  • Determining the main idea and important supporting details
  • Choosing an answer and defending it with evidence from a text
  • Facts and opinions
  • Categories and classification
  • Reading aloud fluently
  • Showing understanding of vocabulary words
  • Decoding multi-syllable words
  • Spelling words with a variety of spelling patterns


Social Studies: Students will explore-

  • Natural resources and uses of water
  • Landforms and bodies of water
  • The first non-native settlers of Washington state: European explorers, fur traders, missionaries, pioneers
  • The costs and benefits of traveling the Oregon Trail

Writing: Students will complete over 10 five-paragraph essays! They will write both fiction and nonfiction throughout the year.
