Independent Workers

In 5th grade students will work to “Strive for 5” and become “Independent Workers.” All students at Thorndyke Elementary are expected to:

  1. Be Safe
  2. Be Respectful
  3. Be Responsible
  4. Be Accepting
  5. Be Here to Learn

In an effort to encourage positive behavior and promote academic success, the Independent Worker program identifies students who “Strive for 5.” Each week, each student is determined to be an Independent Worker, (as opposed to a Soon-to-Be Independent Worker) by doing the following:

  • Turning in their class assignments on time
  • Turning in their homework on time
  • Keeping at least one penalty pass each day
  • Maintaining a neat work area and cubby
  • Coming to school prepared to learn
  • Following the classroom rules
  • Following the playground/school rules
  • Paying attention in class
  • Completing classroom jobs
  • Being kind to others
  • Bringing a written excuse for absences
  • Doing the right thing even when an adult is NOT watching
  • And demonstrating other responsible behaviors

Being an Independent Worker is a position of honor in our classroom and
